The paper presents regional policy objectives for the period 2021-2027 as defined in the document “Objectives, guidelines and instruments of regional policy and strategic starting points for spatial development for the preparation of regional development programmes 2021-2027” (2019) and an analysis of indicators for monitoring these objectives. Despite the COVID-19 crisis, the objectives are still relevant. With regard to the objective of improving the quality of life in all regions, the indicators of quality of life most often exceed the Slovenian average in the Osrednjeslovenska, Gorenjska and Koroška regions. As regards catching up with European regions, the cohesion region Vzhodna Slovenija is lagging behind the average of the surrounding Slovenian, Hungarian and Croatian regions, while the cohesion region Zahodna Slovenija is more developed than the average of the surrounding Slovenian, Austrian and Croatian regions. In terms of reducing regional development disparities, Osrednjeslovenska stands out in a positive way as its development risk index (DRI) value is the lowest and Pomurska in a negative way as its DRI value is the highest. The problem areas near the border have been lagging behind in development for decades. The most successful in achieving the objective of international interregional development integration and cooperation are the Goriška, Obalno-kraška and Pomurska regions, which are also border regions with a long tradition and rich experience of cross-border projects.
