The working paper presents the analysis of participation of young people in education, expenditure on education and efficiency of education. The participation of young people in education is high in international comparison. TIMSS 2015 and PISA 2015 results are higher than the international average, while PIAAC results are lower. Public expenditure on formal education as a share of GDP according to UOE methodology is lower than the EU average; according to Cofog classification it is higher. In the future, we expect increased pressure on capacities and public expenditure especially at the level of upper secondary education. The analysis shows that the efficiency of public spending on education strongly depends on the level of education. In comparison with other countries in the sample, it is lower at the elementary school level and higher at the level of upper secondary education. The values of quality indicators (TIMMS and PISA) are favourable at both levels, but expenditure on the primary level of education per pupil in Slovenia is relatively high because of other factors (small classes, geographical diffusion, etc). According to first results, the efficiency of tertiary education is high, but the indicators and methods used in this area are significantly less reliable.
