Conference: Challenges in Establishing Fiscal Policy Surveilance

Within the framework for enhanced coordination of fiscal policies in the EU, independent fiscal institutions are playing an increasingly important role. Regulations governing the role and responsibilities of these institutions vary across the EU. In some Member States independent fiscal institutions already have a long tradition, while in others, including Slovenia, the challenges of establishing an institutional framework for fiscal policy surveillance have yet to be addressed. In cooperation with the European Commission Representation in Slovenia, the Institute of Macroeconomic Analysis and Development organised international conference to provide an opportunity to exchange thoughts and ideas about an effective fiscal framework for Slovenia. The conference came at a time when Slovenia is modernising the framework for fiscal planning and surveillance.
The conference featured Slovenian and foreign experts. The panel presentation focused on recommendations by the European Commission regarding the formal framework for fiscal policy surveillance, and the presentation of various types of fiscal surveillance institutions and good practices in Europe:

The conference was concluded by a panel discussion about fiscal policy challenges in Slovenia with Dušan Mramor, Minister of Finance, Istvan P. Szekely, Country Director in the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial affairs of the European Commission, and two former ministers of finance, Janez Šušteršič and Mitja Gaspari, and Boštjan Vasle, director IMAD.
