History of IMAD:

In the early years after the Second World War, the Institute for Planning of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia was established with the aim of analysing the national economic and social situation and development. In 1975 this institute was merged with the Institute for Regional and Spatial Planning. The new institute prepared annual economic policy resolutions, medium- and long-term social plans, and analyses of economic, social, regional and spatial development.

In 1991 the Institute underwent further reorganisation. The spatial development department joined the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning, while part of the economic department was brought under the Ministry of Finance. In 1994 the former Institute for Social Planning was renamed the Institute of Macroeconomic Analysis and Development (IMAD). IMAD was in charge of expert and technical co-ordination of several key strategic national documents such as the Strategy for the Economic Development of Slovenia, the Strategy of the Republic of Slovenia for Accession to the European Union (economic and social chapters), the Joint Assessment of Economic Policy Priorities, and Slovenia's Development Strategy. The Institute also participates in drafting the Budget Memorandum, the National Development Plan and the Stability Programme.

Until the adoption of the Act amending the Government of the Republic of Slovenia Act (2000), IMAD was technically a body within the Ministry of Economic Relations and Development. In accordance with this law, it was reorganised as an independent government office managed by a Director who answers directly to the President of the Government. IMAD enjoys complete independence regarding technical and methodological questions related to the use of analytical and forecasting tools and the interpretation of results.
